History of Coffee
Coffee enjoys a rich history. The word "coffee" itself
comes from 3 different languages: Italian (caffe), Turkish (kaveh), and
Arabic (qahwa). The coffee plant originated in the Kaffa region of the
Ethiopian peninsula, and was first imported into Yemen. According to legend,
a Sufi mystic was traveling in Ethiopia and observed goats of unusual
vitality. Upon eating the same berries the goats had been eating, he
experienced the same effect. A similar discovery is ascribed to an Ethiopian
goatherd named Kaldi. The Arabic word for coffee originally referred to a
type of wine, and in the 16th Century AD, coffee was outlawed in Mecca and
Cairo. The overwhelming popularity and demand for coffee quickly overturned
these bans.
In 1554, the first coffeehouse in Istanbul was opened. Coffee was made
available to Europe in the 16th Century thanks to the British and Dutch East
India companies, and by the mid-17th Century, coffeehouses were opened in
London, Boston, and Paris. By 1675, there were more than 3,000 coffee houses
in England alone.
Vienna became part of the coffee trend in 1683, after
the battle of Vienna. Coffee was taken in the spoils from the defeated
Turks, and Vienna has been a cultural and quality center for coffee ever
